The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has opened the online application window for the Junior Engineer (JE) Examination 2026. Eligible candidates can apply for Junior Engineer and Scientific Assistant posts through the official SSC website at ssc.gov.in.
The application process which began on September 2, will continue till September 22, 2026. The last date to pay the application fee is September 23. Candidates will also be allowed to modify and edit their applications between September 28 and September 30, till 11 pm. A candidate can correct and resubmit the application twice during this window.
The SSC JE 2026 recruitment drive will fill 1,748 tentative vacancies across various government organisations and offices. The posts are Group B positions in Level 6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission, with a pay scale of Rs 35,400 to Rs 1,12,400.
The SSC JE 2026 Paper 1 is tentatively scheduled for October/November 2026, while Paper 2 is expected to be held in December 2026. The Commission will announce the detailed examination schedule separately.
SSC JE 2026: POSTS AND ELIGIBILITY
The recruitment covers Junior Engineer posts in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Electrical and Mechanical, and Telecom disciplines across organisations including the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Central Water Commission, Central Public Works Department (CPWD), Military Engineer Services (MES), National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO), Department of Telecommunications and the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
The notification also includes the post of Scientific Assistant in the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Educational qualifications vary by post. For several Junior Engineer posts, candidates with a degree or three-year diploma in the relevant engineering discipline are eligible, while some posts also require relevant work experience.
For example, candidates applying for JE Civil in the Border Roads Organisation can hold a degree in Civil Engineering or a three-year diploma along with two years of relevant experience. Similarly, eligibility requirements differ for Electrical, Mechanical and Telecom posts.
Candidates applying for Scientific Assistant in IMD must have a bachelor’s degree in Science with Physics as one of the subjects, or a relevant degree in areas such as Computer Science, Computer Applications, Electronics, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Instrumentation, Information Technology or Telecommunication Engineering.
SSC JE AGE LIMIT
The crucial date for determining the age of candidates is August 1, 2026.
For posts with an upper age limit of 30 years, candidates should have been born between August 2, 1996 and August 1, 2008. For posts with an upper age limit of 32 years, the date-of-birth range is August 2, 1994 to August 1, 2008.
Age relaxation is available to reserved categories as per government rules. SC/ST candidates get five years of relaxation, while OBC candidates get three years. PwBD candidates are eligible for relaxation ranging from 10 to 15 years depending on their category.
SSC JE 2026 APPLICATION FEE
The application fee is Rs 100.
Women candidates and candidates belonging to SC, ST, PwBD and Ex-Servicemen categories are exempted from paying the fee. The fee can be paid online through BHIM UPI, net banking or debit cards.
Candidates have to first complete One-Time Registration (OTR) on the new SSC website.
The Commission has clarified that OTR generated on the old SSC website will not be functional on the new website. Applications can be submitted through the SSC website or the ‘mySSC’ mobile application.
SSC JE 2026 EXAM PATTERN
The SSC JE examination will be conducted in two papers, both through computer-based examination.
Paper 1 will include General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness and the relevant engineering/scientific subject. It will carry 200 questions for 200 marks and will have a duration of two hours. Candidates eligible for a scribe will get an additional 40 minutes.
Paper 2 will carry 100 questions for 300 marks and will also have a duration of two hours, with 40 minutes of compensatory time for eligible candidates using a scribe.
Paper 1 is qualifying in nature, while candidates will be shortlisted for Paper 2 based on merit after meeting the minimum qualifying marks. Final merit will be determined using the normalised scores of Paper 2.
There will be negative marking of 0.25 marks for every wrong answer in Paper 1 and one mark for every wrong answer in Paper 2. Both papers will consist of objective-type multiple-choice questions in Hindi and English.
The Commission will also provide a scientific calculator on the computer screen during the examination. Physical calculators will not be permitted inside the examination lab.
