Most people in India dream of getting a government job, not leaving one. But one man says he willingly gave up that security to study at IIM Ahmedabad, believing the decision would help him grow in the long run.

Amit Soni, who earlier worked as an SSB Assistant Commandant on the Indo-Nepal border, recently shared on Instagram that leaving his job to pursue an MBA at IIM Ahmedabad cost him around Rs 74 lakh. He also explained how he arrived at that figure and why he still believes the decision was worth it.

Here’s How He Calculated It

In his Instagram video, Soni said, “Rs 74 Lakhs. That’s what it cost me to quit a government job, the same day I got into IIM Ahmedabad.” He explained that the amount includes both the direct expenses of studying at IIM Ahmedabad and the money he believes he gave up by leaving his government job.

According to Soni, the one-year Post Graduate Programme for Executives (PGPX) at IIM Ahmedabad costs Rs 37.10 lakh in tuition fees. He estimated spending another Rs 4.5 lakh on the programme’s international immersion and around Rs 2.5 lakh on living expenses during the course. He also said he had to pay Rs 9.80 lakh as a resignation bond after leaving his government job.

Apart from these expenses, Soni counted what he called the “opportunity cost” of quitting his job. He estimated that he gave up around Rs 20 lakh in salary and other employment benefits during the one year he spent studying.

Why He Has No Regrets

Even after spending such a large amount, Soni said he never questioned his decision. “Just conviction,” he wrote in the post when talking about whether he had a backup plan. He also added, “Is it worth it? Absolutely yes.”

Soni explained that he does not see the decision only in terms of money. “Because some investments aren’t measured in lakhs, they’re measured in who you become on the other side. Uniform to boardroom. Service to strategy. This is just chapter two,” he wrote.

In one of his earlier Instagram videos, he had also shared that he chose “growth” over “comfort” when deciding to leave his government job and return to college.

An ex-government officer who quit his job for IIM Ahmedabad calculated the cost of his decision at Rs 74 lakh, including tuition fees of Rs 37.10 lakh, Rs 4.5 lakh for international immersion, Rs 2.5 lakh for living expenses, a Rs 9.
