SSC CGL Jobs 2026: Posts List, Salary & More [Updated]

Now let’s look at the actual SSC CGL job details, what each role does, where you work, and who it suits best to help you make your decision.

1. Assistant Audit Officer (AAO) — Level 8 | CAG

You join as a Gazetted officer from day one, which is a bigger deal than it sounds. Gazetted officers have a different level of authority, a different stamp on documents, and a different standing in the government hierarchy compared to non-gazetted posts.

The work: You audit government expenditure. If a ministry has spent ₹40 crore on a project, your department checks whether that money moved correctly, was documented properly, and reached where it was supposed to. You flag irregularities, write audit paras (formal findings), and report up to the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, one of the most powerful constitutional bodies in the country.

It’s not exciting in the way field jobs are. But it carries real authority, real accountability, and a career ceiling that most SSC CGL jobs don’t have.

Promotion path: AAO → Audit Officer → Senior Audit Officer → Deputy Director → Director → Principal Director

Watch out for: AAO seats are limited. Some cycles have seen zero vacancies. Don’t build your entire strategy around AAO without a solid backup preference.

2. Assistant Section Officer (ASO) in CSS — Level 7 | Central Secretariat

This is the most popular desk post in SSC CGL and the reasons are legitimate.

You work inside central government ministries. Your job is to manage files, draft policy-related notes, coordinate between departments, and report to senior officers (who are often IAS-level). Sounds ordinary, but here’s the reality: every major policy decision in the country runs through files that CSS officers like you process. It’s quiet, structured work with a direct line to how the country is administered.

What makes CSS special is promotion speed. It’s the fastest departmental promotion track in the entire SSC CGL ecosystem. ASO to Section Officer can happen in 3–5 years. From there, the path to Under Secretary, Deputy Secretary, and beyond is structured and real.

Promotion path: ASO → Section Officer → Under Secretary → Deputy Secretary → Joint Secretary

Posting: Almost always Delhi. If that’s where you want to build your career, this is your post.

3. ASO in MEA — Level 7 | Ministry of External Affairs

Same pay level as CSS, different world entirely.

The administrative work is similar to file management, correspondence, and coordination. But MEA’s unique feature is foreign posting. Senior MEA officers get deputed to Indian embassies and consulates abroad. This doesn’t happen immediately; it depends on seniority and departmental availability. But no other SSC CGL post gives you this possibility at all. For candidates who are open to it, MEA ASO is the only government job at this level that could eventually have you working in Washington, Berlin, Tokyo, or Dubai.

Promotion path: ASO → Section Officer → Under Secretary → Deputy Secretary

4. Assistant Section Officer – AFHQ

This post works under the Armed Forces Headquarters Civil Service. Officers assist in administrative and policy-related work for defence services such as the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

You manage files related to defence administration, logistics planning, personnel matters, and coordination between military and civilian departments.

Promotion path: ASO → Section Officer → Under Secretary

5. Income Tax Inspector (ITI) — Level 7 | CBDT

This is the most popular field-plus-desk post in SSC CGL, and it earns that reputation. You work under the Central Board of Direct Taxes. Your day has two sides. The desk side: assessing individual and corporate tax returns, issuing notices, handling TDS matters, processing refunds. The field side: surveys, inspections, and participating in coordinated raid operations on tax evaders.

ITI posts are zonal, meaning SSC allots you to a zone based on your home state preference, and your posting stays within that zone. If you want to stay near home, ITI is one of your best options among Level 7 posts.

After joining, you go through a 12-week departmental training covering tax law, investigation procedures, and office administration before you handle independent work.

Promotion path: ITI → Income Tax Officer (ITO) → Assistant Commissioner → Deputy Commissioner

6. Assistant Enforcement Officer — Level 7 | Directorate of Enforcement

This is one of the most powerful investigative posts available through SSC CGL. Assistant Enforcement Officers work under the Enforcement Directorate and deal with financial crime investigations.

You investigate violations under laws such as FEMA and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The job involves analysing financial transactions, assisting in investigations related to money laundering, and supporting enforcement actions against illegal financial activities.

The role combines desk analysis with field investigation, especially when handling financial records and coordinating with other agencies.

Promotion path: AEO → Enforcement Officer → Assistant Director

7. Sub-Inspector — Level 7 | CBI

The CBI SI is the most demanding SSC CGL job on this list — and the most financially rewarding at entry level.

You investigate corruption cases, bank fraud, economic offences, and high-profile criminal matters. The hours are irregular. Transfers happen across India, regularly. Pressure is part of the job, not an occasional thing.

But here’s the compensation side: CBI SI gets a 20% Special Security Allowance on top of their basic pay every single month. At Level 7, that’s roughly ₹9,000 extra per month compared to every other Level 7 post. The total gross in a metro city touches ₹89,000–92,000 from the first month.

Promotion path: SI → Inspector → Deputy SP → SP

8. Inspector (Central Excise) — Level 7 | CBIC

CBIC Inspectors enforce GST and customs law. You inspect imported and exported goods at ports, warehouses, and checkpoints. You investigate tax evasion and participate in anti-smuggling operations. Major postings happen at international ports and airports — Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata — where the volume and complexity of the work is significant. This post does not have mandatory physical standards unlike some enforcement posts such as CBI SI or Preventive Officer.

Promotion path: Inspector → Superintendent → Assistant Commissioner

9. Inspector Examiner — Level 7 | CBIC

Inspector Examiner works in the customs department under CBIC and is responsible for checking imported and exported goods at ports and airports.

You examine cargo, verify customs documentation, and ensure that duties and regulations are properly followed during international trade transactions. Most postings are at major ports and airports such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata.

Promotion path: Examiner → Appraiser → Assistant Commissioner

10. Inspector Preventive Officer — Level 7 | CBIC

This role involves anti-smuggling operations, surveillance activities, and inspections at ports, airports, and coastal regions. Unlike Central Excise Inspectors, this role may involve night shifts and active enforcement duties.

Promotion path: Preventive Officer → Superintendent → Assistant Commissioner

11. Junior Statistical Officer (JSO) — Level 6 | MoSPI

JSO is the only post in SSC CGL with a subject-specific eligibility condition. You need Statistics or Mathematics in your graduation (or sometimes 12th standard) to be allotted this post.

The work involves collecting, compiling, and analysing statistical data for government surveys and policy planning. National-level data on GDP, employment, agriculture, and economic indicators flows through departments where JSOs work.

If you have the right background and enjoy data-driven, research-based work, this post is genuinely underrated. If you don’t have that background, it’ll feel wrong from day one.

Promotion path: JSO → Statistical Investigator → Senior Statistical Officer

12. Auditor / Accountant — Level 5 | CAG, CGDA, CGA

The most underrated posts on the entire SSC CGL list.

You process departmental bills, manage government financial records, handle pension and salary accounts, and assist in internal audits. There’s no fieldwork, no irregular hours, no surprise transfers. You come in at 9, your work is clear, and you leave at 5.

It’s not a glamorous job description — but for candidates who want a clean, stable, genuinely balanced central government career, Auditor and Accountant deliver exactly that.

Promotion path: Auditor → Senior Auditor → Audit Officer (via departmental exam)

13. Tax Assistant — Level 4 | CBDT / CBIC

The entry-level post of the SSC CGL jobs list. Starting basic pay is ₹25,500, which is the lowest on the list — but the upgrade path is clear and achievable.

You handle data entry, tax return processing, refund management, and administrative support in tax offices. The work is structured, the environment is professional, and the departmental exam route from Tax Assistant → Senior Tax Assistant → Inspector is well-established.

Note: In some SSC CGL cycles, a few additional posts may also appear in smaller numbers, such as Divisional Accountant or certain Assistant Section Officer posts in specialised departments. However, these vacancies are not released every year and usually come in limited numbers compared to the major SSC CGL jobs listed above.
