Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) remain one of the most preferred career choices for engineering graduates because of their competitive salaries, career growth, and job security. While many PSUs recruit through GATE, several organisations also conduct direct recruitment through Computer-Based Tests (CBT) and interviews.
Based on previous recruitment trends, companies such as ONGC, BHEL, IOCL, HPCL, Coal India, and SAIL are expected to announce recruitment in 2026. Here, we highlighted the major PSUs likely to recruit without GATE, their selection process, and the engineering branches typically considered.
What are Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs)?
Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) are government-owned enterprises offering significant career prospects. This identifies PSUs expected to recruit candidates in 2026 without requiring GATE scores. Based on past trends, these organisations primarily use their own Computer-Based Tests (CBT) and Personal Interviews for selection across various engineering disciplines.
PSUs are government-owned companies where the government (either central or state) holds more than a 51% share. Their operations are largely guided by government regulations.
Categories of PSUs:
PSUs are classified into three main categories:
-
MahaRatna
-
Navratna
-
Mini Ratna
Recruitment Modes: PSUs across all three categories recruit through various channels, including both via GATE scores and without GATE scores. They are highly sought after due to their attractive salary structures and Cost-to-Company (CTC) packages.
Top PSUs Expected to Recruit Without GATE in 2026
Based on recruitment trends observed in previous years, several PSUs conduct their own recruitment drives, primarily using a Computer-Based Test (CBT) followed by a Personal Interview (PI).
Here are key PSUs and their recruitment methods/branches:
-
-
Recruits for: Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, EC (Electronics & Communication), CH (Chemical), MT (Metallurgical/Material Science/Management Trainee).
-
Method: CBT + PI.
-
Past Recruitment: Recruited Engineer Trainee and Supervisor Trainee in Year 2025.
-
-
-
Recruits for: Management Trainee.
-
Method: CBT.
-
Status: Recruitment for the 2026 season has already been announced (approximately 660 vacancies, with around 400 for core engineering branches).
-
-
-
Recruits for: Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, CH.
-
Method: Regularly announces recruitments, often for Engineers Officer Grade A.
-
Status: Recruitment for Engineers Officer Grade A is already available. HPCL sometimes conducts two recruitment cycles in a single year.
-
-
-
Recruitment History: Previously recruited via GATE scores, later transitioned to CBT for specific branches (e.g., Electrical, IA, CH) followed by GDPI (Group Discussion + Personal Interview). No GATE-based recruitment has been observed recently.
-
Future Outlook: High chances of recruiting via CBT. There is potential for Mechanical and other branches in the upcoming vacancies.
-
Status: Recruited last year, but no recruitment announced yet for this year, making it a possibility.
-
-
-
Recruits for: Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, EC, CH, PI (Production/Industrial).
-
Method: Previously via GATE, now primarily uses CBT mode.
-
Past Recruitment: Recruited an Assistant Executive Engineer in 2025 via CBT + PI.
-
Future Outlook: Recruitment is definitely expected for the 2026 season.
-
-
-
Recruits for: Management Trainee (Technical).
-
Method: Formerly recruited via GATE, but announced a shift to CBT mode from Year 2025 onwards.
-

Recruits for: Management Trainee.
-
Past Recruitment: Had 80 vacancies last season.
-
Future Outlook: High possibility of recruitment this year.
