Shobha Ohatkar Appointed Chairperson of Bihar Staff Selection Commission


Retired IPS officer Shobha Ohatkar has been appointed as the new Chairperson of the Bihar Staff Selection Commission (BSSC). The appointment comes shortly after her retirement as the Director General of Home Guard and Fire Services, Bihar, on June 30, 2026.

With her appointment, the Bihar Government has entrusted the leadership of the state’s key recruitment body to an experienced administrator with a long career in public service.

Appointment Under BSSC Act

The appointment has been made under the provisions of the Bihar Staff Selection Commission Act, 2002, which governs the functioning of the commission responsible for conducting recruitment for various state government posts.

As Chairperson, Shobha Ohatkar will oversee the commission’s recruitment processes, examinations and administrative functions aimed at ensuring transparent and efficient selection of candidates for government services.

Additional Charge Handed Over

Following Ohatkar’s appointment, Additional Chief Secretary Arvind Kumar Chaudhary has been relieved of the additional charge of BSSC Chairperson.

Chaudhary had been handling the responsibility alongside his regular administrative duties until the appointment of a full-time Chairperson.

The move is expected to provide dedicated leadership to the commission as it continues to conduct recruitment for various departments of the Bihar Government.

Experienced Police Officer

Shobha Ohatkar belongs to the 1990 batch of the Indian Police Service (IPS) of the Bihar cadre.

During her distinguished career spanning more than three decades, she served in several important policing and administrative assignments across the state. Her last posting was as Director General of Home Guard and Fire Services, Bihar, from where she retired at the end of June 2026.

She is widely regarded for her administrative experience and leadership in public service.

Key Role of the Bihar Staff Selection Commission

The Bihar Staff Selection Commission plays a crucial role in recruiting personnel for various state government departments and organisations.

The commission is responsible for conducting competitive examinations, preparing merit lists and ensuring a transparent and merit-based recruitment process for numerous government positions.
